Sue Townsend:
The Woman who Went to a Bed for a Year/Žena, která si šla lehnout a rok nevstala
This book actually started my charity shops furious ride, it was my first catch. Honestly, I'd never had heard about the book before, but Sue Townsend is quite a famous writer and in my experience, every story beginning with "A Woman/A Man, who..." is usually funny and interesting reading. And this book wasn't a disappointment, it was interesting enough.
Takže si jednoho dne řekla "DOST", vlezla si do postele a rok v ní zůstala.
Eva Beaver, good-looking and intelligent mother of twins who just left to university, is in her late forties and when her kids leave, she realizes that she spent 17 years being a servant. She took care of her kids, exceptionally inteligent, but somewhat asocial individuals, who probably inherited all this from their father Brian, who is an astronomer. She took care of him too, she took care of their house, she just took care of everything. So one day, she said "ENOUGH", climbed into bed and stayed there for a year.
I must say there are some absurd parts, but maybe that's why the book is so interesting. It's nice that the whole story isn't just about how Eva lies in bed, thinks about her life and receives visitors. The author added several unusual characters who helped the book to get in better place. And even the story seems to be so far-fetched, I'm sure perceptive reader will find that the heroine isn't so different from the thousands of women all over the world, she simply chose a unique way to deal with eerything.
SPOILERY!
But what was she doing whole year in her bed? How did she manage to get food and other things? Is it possible to find a "guy" when you're lying in bed 24/7? Why did people think she was a saint? What happened, when her husband's mistress came one day? And who the heck is that lying girl who came with the twins for Christmas? SPOILERS!

Interesting book, but it probably won't please everyone. Someone could throw the book out the window, but for someone it could become a matter of the heart. I guess Sue Townsend's british humor isn't for anyone!
